 Does boxing cause brain damage?
There are inherent risks in boxing just like any other contact sport. But unlike other sports, boxing has been around for more than 100 years and with time has come safety precautions that the NFL and MMA are still figuring out. AMATEUR boxing is relatively safe when executed with proper equipment (headgear, large padded gloves, mouthpiece, and groin protector). Professional boxing (NO headgear, smaller gloves) carries a separate set of risks, but amateur/Olympic style boxing is a not-for-profit, safety first sport. As with any sport, we strongly encourage every athlete, parent or guardian to research and become familiar with all risks before participating.

Can I join Knowledge Boxing just to relieve some stress?
Absolutely! Our high quality heavy bags love to be hit and hit hard. And the best thing is the bags don't hit back! Come release the day's aggravation with us!

Many people only have a casual knowledge of the sport of boxing, especially boxing training, so here is a list of Frequently Asked Questions for you to browse. If your specific question isn't answered send an email or stop by the center!
Why should I let my child box?
Since its inception over 100 years ago, the sport of boxing has improved, and quite frankly saved the lives of men and women, both young and old, across the globe by teaching them how to apply critical thinking skills both in and outside the boxing ring. Boxing develops an individual's ability to think concisely, persevere toward success, pay attention to minute details, exercise self-control, set goals, and make adjustments which are just as applicable in day-to-day life as they are in the sport of boxing. Additionally, the physical conditioning that boxing training demands is second to none!

Is boxing only for troubled youth?
While boxing is renowned for rehabilitating troubled youth, it is equally beneficial for all youth. Boxing can help the bully, the bullied, the shy kid, the brainiac, the lazy type, the overweight, the hyper active, the nervous, the inquisitive, the aggressive, the passive, etc. Boxing is also good for those kids who are not tall enough for basketball, not strong enough for football, not coordinated enough for baseball and not fast enough for soccer.
Is the Knowledge Boxing Center just for younger people?
Absolutely not! The life skills identified above benefit the young as well as more mature people. We welcome everyone who is able to focus and at least healthy enough to begin training (don't worry, we'll be right there with you every step of the way). Besides, punching a bag with all you've got is a healthy way to relieve the day's stress.
Can females box?
ABSOLUTELY! All are welcome at the Knowledge Boxing Center! In fact, a lot of trainers say females boxers learn at a much faster rate than male boxers.
Do I have to spar (get punched)?
Absolutely not! We recognize and very much welcome the people who want the physical and mental benefits of training without the risk of getting hit! Our non-competitive athletes will learn the fundamentals of boxing and experience a dynamite work out without getting punched. (Heavy bags don't punch back).

 Can I spar?
Definitely! Evenly skilled trained boxers are allowed to spar in the proper equipment which includes headgear, mouthpiece, a groin protector and 16 oz. sparring gloves. All sparring sessions are supervised by our USA Boxing certified coaches.
 Who can boxing training benefit?
How old does a child have to be to box?
It's largely dependent on the personality and desire of the kid, but in general kids 8 years old and up have the attention span and coordination to learn how to box. That being said, we have seen some born fighters take to the sport as young as 4, so in general, a child has to be 8+ to box, but if you think your 7 and under child is that one, please bring him or her in for an assessment.
What do I need to start?
Each athlete will need a pair of hand wraps to start (180 inches for adults, 108 inches for kids), boxing gloves and workout clothes. Any coach can recommend the right brand and size.
Can I compete in official amateur tournaments/bouts?
Absolutely! After you are fully trained in defense and offense, our trainers will take you through the process of official amateur competition in USA Boxing sanctioned bouts. The Knowledge Boxing Center hosts official bouts in the Southern Maryland area so you will also get the opportunity to showcase your skills at home.

Can I compete in official professional bouts?
Absolutely, but only after you've had amateur experience.
